Overview:

Having penetrated into the territory of the small Republic of San Marino, Allied forces moved into action during the morning of 20 September. The task of the 16th Light Infantry was to gain the high ground, known as Torraccia of Galazzano (Hill 235), a vital height overlooking the nearby crossroads that led to Rimini and on to Verucchio. Defending the hill were German soldiers of the II/993, who would, as said by on Sammarinian, ‘write on this land one of the worst pages of its history’.
Attacker: British (Elements of C Company, 16th Durham Light Infantry, 139th Infantry Brigade, 46th Infantry Division)
Defender: German (Elements of 2nd Battalion, 993rd Regiment, 278th Infantry Division)
