Overview:
The German advance in the Crimea meant nothing without control of the city of Sevastopol. Having conquered the rest of the Crimea in late 1941, the Germans turned their attention to Sevastopol but were repulsed twice. In May, the German 11th Army reorganized, replenished ammunition stocks and absorbed replacements in preparation for its third assault against the seaside fortress. Operation STORFANG was designed to assault the Russian defensive position in front of the city and was preceded by several days of artillery bombardment. Even though expected by the Russians, the German assault penetrated the outer crust of the defensive belt. In order to restore the situation, the Russians counterattacked the next day before the Germans could take advantage of their success.Attacker: Russian (81st Tank Bn, 287th Infantry Regt, and 1st Bn 2nd Perekop Regt)
