Overview:

When the first assault wave of Egyptian soldiers scrambled up rope and bamboo ladders following their crossing of the Suez Canal, many of men were seen carrying unusual equipment. Some had tubes over their shoulders, carrying the new Rocket Propelled Grenade, RPG-7. Others were wearing a special load-carrying assault jerkin, itself considered a 'secret weapon' at the time and one that allowed three men to carry a Soviet 82mm mortar. Others had an even more sinister load, carried in canvas-covered cases, carried or strapped on their backs. The heretofore unknown suitcase contained a sophisticated new weapons system --a Russian wire-guided missile code-named "Sagger". The first wave of the assault was not tasked to capture Bar-Lev Line positions. Instead, they were to fan out into the desert for 10 miles, dig in, and await the inevitable Israeli armored counter-attack.
