Overview:
The 48th Panzer Corp’s main effort was the Panzergrenadier Division Gross Deutschland, with 11th Panzer supporting the attack on the east flank. Both divisions launched on 4 July to gain advantageous attack positions for 5 July, and were rudely introduced to the difficulty of the Russian defenses. The linchpin of the defense was the heavily fortified village of Cherkasskoye, defended by the 196th Guards Rifle Regiment, and reinforced with the 611th Antitank Regiment and elements of the 138th Guards Artillery Regiment. The German attacked the village in force with tanks, flamethrower tanks, infantry, engineers, half-tracks, SP tank destroyers, and assault guns.
