Overview:
The 102nd SS Battalion was recruited from Ukrainian villages and POWs in 1942 to protect military depots and transportation lines from Soviet partisans. In January 1944 they were incorporated in the 30th SS (White Russian NO. 2) Division and sent to the Western Front to hunt for French Partisans. The German SS brutality, the disdain for the Ukrainians among them, and the fact that France was not their fight, led to a coup on August 26th. Major Ivan Hloba, the Ukrainian 102nd commander with proud Cossack ancestry, led the revolt which resulted in the killing of all German SS officers and NCOs. Major Hloba then contacted the French resistance and offered his unit’s service. The German high command could not ignore this new threat and sent the 68th SS Cossack Cavalry to deal with the “traitorous” Ukrainians.Attacker: Ukrainian (1st Ukrainian Battalion)
