Overview:
May 23rd marked the beginning of the breakout from the Anzio beachhead, codenamed Operation Buffalo. On that morning, the 45th Infantry Division moved out. Company L crossed a landscape torn by American and British munitions. The Germans, recovering from the surprise and shock of the attack, began returning fire and shelling the Americans.
