Overview:
Soviet forces appeared on the outskirts of Budapest in late December, and pressed their attack to encircle the city. As the Soviets began the methodical process of attacking the urban areas, the Hungarians fought back, but yielded ground to the Soviet juggernaut, and the defense started to crumble. For unknown reasons the Soviet forces were pulled off the front line and replaced with newly allied 7th Romanian Corps. The Hungarians despised the Romanians, and their fighting spirit would change quickly and dramatically. The Romanian 2nd Division attacked into the heart of the city near the eastern train station in Pest. The fighting was brutal, close quarter type. It raged from building to building. Hungarian assault guns pulled up close to the station and bolstered the defense. The Romanians continued to press the attack. . .Attacker: Romanian (Elements of 2nd Division)
