Overview:

"A Helping Hand?" - - - -In early 1943, the German troops in the Caucasus were in full retreat following the Soviet victories around Stalingrad and the Don River. While the German 17th Army was able to hold the Kuban peninsular, the 1st Panzer Army sought to reach the city of Rostov, allowing them to rejoin Army Group South. The city thus became a target of the Red Army, which tried to seize it, thus trapping the Germans. Fortunately for the Germans, they received some quality reinforcements in the form of the schwere Panzer Abteilung 503, the first German heavy tank battalion to be entirely equipped with the new Tiger tanks. The “thick fur” of these new powerful Panzers allowed them to win several clashes facing an opponent with no equivalent tank. The Soviet pressure was nonetheless strong, and the tanks of the sPzAbt 503 were rushed from one hotspot to another.
