Overview:

As the fight for the Nijmegen bridges began in earnest, units of the 508th PIR were assigned the task of securing a thin line, protecting the Groesbeek Heights, along the Wyler-Nijmegen Road. On the 19th of September, elements of the 3rd Battalion, 508th PIR pushed the Germans out of the border village of Beek. As there was not enough infantry to secure a proper perimeter, the 3rd Battalion followed the necessary dictum of forming a screen and left only two platoons to defend Beek. On the 20th, the Germans launched a counterattack with the hope of collapsing the thinly held eastern flank of the 82nd Airborne and drawing vitally needed units away from the bridges.
Attacker: German (Elements Kampfgruppe Becker, 3rd Fallschirmjaeger Division)
Defender: American (Elements Co G, III/508th Parachute Infantry Regt., 82nd Airborne Division)

2024-01-24(A) Mark Thompson vs Gary Fortenberry (Americans) American winThe Germans managed to flush out and break the American's HIP’d BAZ-toting 3-3-7, pass one AC and the Ht through the northern woods gap unscathed, and reach the center woods line with my infantry intact. Things went “South” quickly thereafter. The Americans took out the infiltrating AC with a street-fighting leader superman and an MMG-rate tear reduced to smithereens a concealed three squad stack. From there, although the Germans attritted a few more Ami units - in part helped by their Sniper - they could not make head way and the Americans skillfully positioned their remaining forces to block the German exit and/or leave through the American exit area. The Germans conceded in Turn 5 with 5 “net” points exited after their second AC fell in an all or nothing gambit to take out the bulk of the American blocking force with PB Bounding Fire. Well-played by Gary and great fun.
2023-06-09(D) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best German winIt was a game of bad dice rolls on both sides. The Americans squandered good shots with high rolls and the Germans ELR'd early and often. The killer was the Americans breaking after shooting bazookas out of buildings with a 12 casualty reducing one squad. By Turn 5, all Americans were dead or broken except the 9-1 and a 7-4-7 which would exit. Dan would exit 22 points (needed 24) and on Turn 6 managed to rally and exit 3 more points off for 25 and the win.
2023-06-09(A) Dan Best vs Kermit Mullins German win
2023-03-05(A) David Ramsey vs Craig Benn American winNot a great attack on my side after losing the unarmoured vehicle cheaply and allowing the sniper to recall another HT. I pushed very aggressively on the first two turns but ultimately lost too much in order to have enough to make victory possible.
2023-03-01(A) Paul Legg vs Ian Ainsworth American winHeroes 2023 Friendly. Found this difficult for the Germans, lost the unarmoured half track to a sniper early on. A second halftrack turned into a blazing wreck by a well placed HIP bazooka team. Half the 2nd liners were conscripts and one 548 had dropped to 2nd line when I conceded on turn 4.
