Overview:
At the end of May, the French dug in along the Somme, knowing full well there could be no retreat. But in the dizzy days that were going on in Paris, orders alternated between going on the attack or digging in along a line that could be defended. Weygand was brought in, and he saw his job as fighting a good battle, saving the honor of the French army, and then surrendering.
