Sittang Bridge, Burma 1942-02-22 (7 others)

Overview:

The Japanese 18th Division, under the command of Lt. General Renya Mutaguchi, was advancing his 55th and 56th Regiments toward the only major bridge across the Sittang River. If he could capture this bridge intact, he could then advance on to Rangoon which was a major source of supplies and reinforcements to this part of Burma. The British 48th Infantry Brigade, 17th Indian Division was tasked with slowing down the Japanese advance. The rest of the division needed time to move the last of the supplied and equipment across the bridge. They ran into problems when a truck broke down half way across and could not be removed.
