Overview:
The German blitzkrieg had rolled steadily through the French countryside. At the town of Arras, however, the stubborn defenders had blunted the German juggernaut. The counterattack of Frankforce was launched with the purpose of easing enemy pressure on Arras and slowing the German encirclement of the British Expeditionary Force. The immediate aim of the men of the 7th Royal Tank Regiment and the 8th Durham Light Infantry was to clear the Germans from the area to the south and east of town. After an exhausting road march, the attackers set off to meet the Germans and destiny.Attacker: British (Elements of the Durham Light Infantry and 1st Army Tank Regiment)

2023-05-04 | (A) Mark Thompson | vs | German (Eric Zagdan-Gross) | British win (VASL Log) | Confronted with a German defensive line fairly far forward and dispersed across Board 4, the British entered en masse on the German left flank, save only for the 50mm mortar and Mk1 in the center to interdict reinforcement of this flank. The plan progressed well until one German 88 appeared in hex 43 Z8 and immobilized one Matilda 2 and flamed one Matilda 1. The flank crumbled shortly thereafter when the 88 X'd on an intensive fire shot and the British infantry and tanks streamed past and onto Board 43. The Mk I partially interdicted the German retreat through the central grain field while the British infantry approached the exit area on the far left, using area fire shots on empty hexes to (unsuccessfully) flush out the remaining 88. On Turn 5, the British tanks elected to force the issue - first the Mk I conducted an overrun then successfully sped off, followed by the Matilda 2, which baited the second 88 (in hex 43 O3) to fire (and miss). The British infantry were stymied in exiting by a solid FG at the back end of the central grain field (with the 9-2 leader), but enough were able to push through the residual and the British reached the required VC by exiting two Matilda I'd. Ultimately, the hindrances, small target size, and motion status were too much for the 88s. Fun scenario - a short of 88s at Son, with tanks..... | ||
