Overview:

"the Dream is Over" -- The Battle of the Bulge was only days old and Fritz Bayerlin’s Panzer-Lehr Division pressing westward throughout the day. Kampfgruppe von Poschinger took St. Hubert without any resistance late that night. The advance continued towards the important road centre of Rochefort. Early the 23 December the town was shelled and a German reconnaissance patrol was sent in and reported that the town was empty. Rochefort was in fact well defended by some of the US 3rd Battalion, 335th Infantry Regiment reinforced by with Regimental anti-tank guns and one platoon each from the 638th Tank Destroyer Battalion, 309th Engineer Combat Battalion and 29th(Separate) Infantry Regiment. At about 0200 hours, Panzer-Lehr Division resumed the advance and was stopped by intense crossfire. Bayerlin was forced to set up a systematic and time-consuming attack. The American defenders fought back stubbornly from house to house. The Panzer Lehr’s field guns were brought up to pound the eastern approaches. Then supported by weight of Panthers the Grenadiers of Poschinger’s Kampfgruppe launched their assault crossing the L’Homme River by early afternoon.

2024-12-07(A) Dave B vs JR VanMechelen American winJR traded in the three MTRs for an OBA module - he really wanted that extra leader (neat trick). He also placed his two roadblocks across two of the three bridges over the canal. Good job there! I dismissed the dash-for-the-exit strategy (as I so often do, probably foolishly) and ground ahead with my Panthers and German infantry. After some brutal back and forth, including JR malfunctioning not one, but two BAZ on their first shots, JR used a BAZ to destroy one Panther, and the 57L as intensive fire to destroy another. At that point, I gave up, since I had a hard stop that day, and time was drawing short. Very nice win for JR and the Americans.
2023-06-23(D) John Garlic vs Maurizo Grassi In progress[Imported from ROAR]
2023-01-26(D) Jeff B vs Steve Etzelmueller American winGermans opted for a heavy north approach, with only a very token force in the middle to limit a mad-dash reassignment of my men. The first couple turns were simply the Germans getting themselves in position for their assault on the first large stone building, with the Americans mostly just holding their fire and sitting concealed. The Americans, knowing this was an untenable position locating en masse mostly to the 23Y7 building, with a few units across the street in the CC8 building. The next couple turns saw the Germans regroup themselves for these next assaults. With American retreat options limited, the CC8 building was relatively easy to take, and we saw the first casualties of the game when the Americans were completely ousted from here. The Y7 building would prove much more of a thorn however, especially with the interior building hex allowing the Americans prime skulking territory. Having yet to discover an AT gun, the Germans had been meticulously methodical and patient throughout the game. With the Germans closing in on one of the HIP guns' positions, I thought I was being extremely obvious in my attempts to protect it, but the Germans didn't push the envelope and risk too much RBF. When I did reveal it it was to blast 2/3 of the Wasps. By now it was obvious the Germans were simply going to skirt Y7 as much as possible and go for a northernmost bridge crossing. I had only two HS in the two stone buildings there, with some FL-capable units across the street behind the hedgerow, so I scrambled to reposition my other troops on that side of the canal and position my TDs to assist. Meanwhile Y7 held as strongly as ever. A captured American 8-1 revolted, killing his full squad guard and holding up the rest of the Germans on the bridge. He died a heroic death by the end of the turn. Turn 7 then saw the Germans cross the bridge in force, being led by three of the Panthers. The other two followed suit, but the last AT gun finally revealed itself and immobilized the last one on the eastern side of the canal. By the end of the turn the Germans had exactly 48VP west of the canal, with very little I could do to stop him. The German 10-2-led stack of infantry (which had been playing rearguard defense), was forced to end their move just east of the bridge after a failed smoke attempt, and broke to the man during the succesive American DFPh/PFPh. They were able to rout across the bridge however, and if Mr. Big bounced back there would be almost nothing I could do to stop them on the last turn. This did create a small opening for me to get some men across the hedgerow and, with the help of some infantry smoke, I successfully did so. When the 10-2 failed to rally, the Germans would have to get every single unit west of the bridge off to exactly hit 48VP. When a Panther, in the process of trying to lay a last round of smoke, was forced to ESB and failed - leaving it immobile on the goal line - it was game over. This sure sounds like it was an exciting game, and in some ways it was, but the soft ground/mist SSRs and the nature of the game turning into a bridge crossing made it a bit too tedious.
2022-06-04(A) Kevin Sanders vs Jason Littleton German win
2017-02-20(A) Scott Sherer vs Roberto Alesse American winTried for the exit CVP VC and got nowhere close to getting the 48 needed off. Poor planning on my part cost me three Panthers and that was too much to overcome.
