The evening of the 18th had been spent by Kampfgruppe Peiper searching -- fruitlessly -- for alternate routes and bridges that would hold the weight of Peiper's tanks. After 2300 hours that evening the Kampfgruppe halted for the night between the villages of La Gleize and Stoumont, replenishing before a planned move through Stoumont to yet another bridge over the Ambleve River southwest of the Stoumont railway station.
