Overview:

The 11th Guards Army had a clear objective: clear the Moscow-Minsk Highway surroundings from Smolensk to Orsha in order to allow follow on mechanized forces to destroy German units around Orsha. The highway area had seen much fighting in the winter of 1943-44 and was heavily fortified by the Germans with dense trench and minefield systems. In the morning hours the 16th Guards Rifle Division attacked into the teeth of the defenders and was stopped short by the intense fire and cunningly laid fortifications.

2020-01-04(D) Richard Jenulis vs Jim Roche German winThe Russians pushed hard on the North flank, which was heavily defended by the Germans. The 20L and an active sniper tore into the Russian infantry. Some of the worse dice rolling I ever saw didn't help the Russian either. With the mine roller bogged, one KV taken out by AT mines, and a PF turret hit on the flame tank, the Russians called off the attack. The Germans only lost 2 HS.
