Overview:
Following the heavy losses suffered in late January and early February, the Japanese fell back to regroup. The Bataan defenders were given a respite from major attacks for over a month. On April 3rd, the Japanese began their next major assault, this time supported by fresh troops, tanks, heavy artillery and airpower. The major assault was to be made by Lt. General Kitano’s 4th Division against the junction of the 41st and 21st Divisions. After several hours of pounding by Japanese artillery, the Japanese 61st Infantry stepped off, supported by tanks from the 7th Tank Battalion.
