Overview:

In mid-1944, the 5th Police Armored Company was withdrawn from service on the eastern front and moved to Trieste to begin operating along the Adriatic coast. The armored company was furnished with a number of captured Russian T-34 tanks that had been fitted with German equipment including radios. On January 19th, 1945, the Armored Company was ordered to relieve the Italian fascist “Fulmine” Battalion of the Flottigla-Mas Division that had been surrounded at Tarnova. The assault force attacked the Italian partisan forces over a two day period but made little headway against the dug-in defenders. On January 21st, the SS were reinforced with infantry from the SS Police Regiment.
