Overview:

The so called "V-T Line", named after the towns at each end, Vammelsuu-Taipale, was the foremost Finnish defensive position waiting the Soviet riposte of 1944 on the Karelian Isthmus. Nevertheless, only days after the Russian firestorm broke over the Finns, the V-T Line was breached at Kuuterselka. While a heroic counterattack by the Jägers of PJ-2 stemmed the enemy advance, the line was still in Soviet hands. At 2:20 the twilight of a Karelian summer night was disrupted by the cacophony of Finnish heavies and the bombs of a whole squadron of Blenheim bombers was dropped on Russian positions. Fifteen minutes later elements of the Finnish Panzer Division in the form of III/7 Ps.JP., the Finnish assault gun brigade 1/Ryn.Tyk.P. and infantry from JP-3 and JP-4 pushed to recapture the V-T Line. This was the baptism of fire for the StuG III equipped Finnish assault gun unit. The Sturm of Lieutenant Saartio, the commander of 1/Ryn.Tyk.P. advanced as the point vehicle. His gunner was an 18-year old Private 1st Class Olaf Lagus, the son of the famous Major General Lagus, the Guderian of Finland.
