Overview:

The cutting of the link between the German defenders in Goch and those in the Moyland Wood-Calcar position meant a withdrawal to the next line of defense before the Rhine was inevitable. Hitler’s choice to forbid any directives to army, corps or divisional commanders which would even imply a falling back to the Rhine meant the Germans would have to be dug out of the Moyland Wood yard by yard. . .
