Overview:

As in Stalingrad, many pockets of Germans had been encircled. At Velikiye Luki, artillery and armor punctured through the German perimeter and as the headquarters was overrun, orders went out to save yourselves if you could. At night, isolated groups of Germans tried to breakout. The weakest part of the Soviet corridor lay to the southwest in the area of the 129th Rifle Regiment.

2025-05-31(A) Craig Renier vs Dave Mareske Russian winClose game won by a serious blunder by the Germans early on. The German 10-2 leader was pinned in the open and the accompanying squad broke. Rather than voluntarily break and rout to the 9-1 leader, the leader was left in the open and subsequently eliminated in CC on the Russian turn. The squad never rallied and was taken prisoner soon after. This loss of 5 VPs put the German effort in serious jeopardy. The remaining forces were able to thread their way through the defenders, but the Russians were able to slowly close in from multiple directions. The Germans had enough VP remaining but moved two HSs carelessly offering -1 shots that could have been avoided. Those careless moves resulted in broken HS leaving the Germans with a deficit of VPs. The Germans conceded on Turn 8.
