Overview:

The 1st Battalion of the 306th pushed through the town of Ie and had reached positions near the Government House and the lower slopes of the Iegusugu Pinnacle. The Pinnacle was the nerve center of the Japanese defenses on the island, with fire from it causing the Americans many casualties in the preceding days. After beating off several fierce Japanese attacks during the night, the 306th was ready to attack the final Japanese bastion on Ie Shima.
Attacker: American (Companies A and B, 1st Battalion, 306th Regiment, 77th Division/306th Regimental Cannon Company and 706th Tank Battalion)

2023-12-30(D) Jeff Waldon vs Will Willow Japanese win
2022-07-24(D) Michael Rodgers vs Magnus Rimvall Japanese winWith two victory hexes (N4 N5) protected by cliffs on most sides, the Japanese should place his mines on the only two non-cliff approaches to those hexes. The SSR making Upper Cliff Caves easier to have tells the Japanese player to use them. There should also be one or more caves in those two victory hexes.
2018-01-31(A) Jeff B vs Scott Sherer American win15.5 hrsThis is a very fun scenario that has two distinct parts: clearing Government House, and clearing the hill. Turn 1 started as a mixed bag for the Americans. They eliminated a couple Japanese squads and a bunch of dummies, but broke 2 MAs and a CMG, and drove into an AT mine. Recon went good as well as they discovered both roadblocks, all PBs, more than half the caves, and half the guns. Turn 2 progress was greatly aided by one of the AA guns being knocked out with a CH. This allowed the Americans to overrun the Government House, taking out a Japanese leader and a couple squads in the process. The gun had been well-positioned in the S10 orchard, protecting the eastern flank while sitting safely behind the gully. In fact, all of Scott's guns turned out to be very well-positioned and would cause me no end of grief throughout the game. Yet one more MA broke for the Americans this turn, plus a Hellcat was immobilized by a mortar of all things. But all AP mines were discovered by the roving tanks, and the one that had been sitting on the AT mine the past couple turns safely made it off. Despite the attack jumping off so nicely early, it started to bog down in the center. The old WWI gun up on the hill shredded anyone who tried to swing around in the west, and a pesky crew with an HMG in a PB in the east prevented any safe shifting that way. The crew was dispatched in CC, but lack of smoke would make assaulting the hill a tough challenge. NOBA finally came to life in the center of board. I believe this was the only time it actually was effective, though its threat was always there to help keep Japanese shifting at bay. Another Japanese leader was taken out, leaving outside forces to fend for themselves since the last one was safely tucked away in the caves. Turn 4 saw the Americans start their assault on the hill, but down to no mobile AFVs they would have very little cover if things went wrong. The rest of the game was spent slowly whittling away the Japanese cave defenders with the massive American firepower they wielded. Things were looking a bit bleak until a "2" from a FT cleared both caves in N4. This allowed the Americans to completely concentrate on N5. Some tough Japanese conscripts made the job difficult (as they had been doing all day), but in the end 2 DCs were placed on the last GO cave, and one of them blew it to bits. I would gladly play this one again from either side.
2018-01-31(D) Scott Sherer vs Jeff B American winOur second attempt at caves, and things went pretty well. I agree with alot of what Jeff said above. There were repeated times during the course of the scenario when I thought there was no way I could win, and several times I thought I clearly had the upper hand, so I suppose that's the sign of a good scenario. The bulk of my defense was fairly far forward, but I thought I had left enough to defend the caves on the hill. However, the snake-eyes by the FT-toting hero clearing the contents of two caves on a single shot was big, and Jeff's masterful final assault to clear the other VC hex proved too much for my cardboard Japanese, who fought, like their real life counterparts, to the last man. Great scenario!
