During the early phases of the Winter War between the Soviet Union and its smaller neighbor Finland, the Soviets had not yet learned the dangers of approaching seemingly "quiet" border villages. Muolaa was one such village near the border between the two nations. The Soviets had targeted it as an early priority for their cross-border invasion. They were soon to learn that this would not be an easy conquest.
