At the beginning of June 1940, barely repatriated from Norway with the other Alpine units sent to Namsos, the 13e Bataillon de Chasseurs Alpins - 13th BCA - took up position on the Somme and suffered the shock of the German offensive. On the 8th, Captain Montjean's 2nd Company resisted foot by foot, but the attackers infiltrated its rear in the woods of Brocourt. Cautious, the captain made his section of machine guns and his group of anti-tank guns withdraw. But enemy pressure, supported by heavy bombardment, intensified. If the pull back of the Alpine demi-brigade is decided, the 2nd Company must wait 18:45 for its turn to come. Now surrounded with ammunition starting to run out, Captain Montjean ordered: "Fix bayonets!"
