Overview:

General Maxime Weygand issued his Operation Order No. 1, in which he stated “the only way to hold, and beat, the German is by counter-attack”. The French First Army, located in the eastern most positions of what would come to be known as the “Sack” was ill-prepared to carry of Weygand’s plan. The confused situation on the ground was chaotic; the Germans’ rapid westward advance towards the channel, made a mockery of mounting a concerted Allied offensive coordinated from the north and south. Instead of the required divisions; the French V Corps mustered a single regiment with some armoured support for the assault. It achieved limited success, reaching the outskirts of Cambrai, only to be driven back by gathering German forces.

2021-03-16(A) Jeff B vs Scott Sherer German win4.75 hrsScott and I were both curious about the ASL For Fun scenarios, so it was nice when the Archive randomly selected this one for us to try. The problem for the French from the get-go is that they basically have to pick a side to attack due to their platoon tanks. I chose the east. Scott sucked me in to some VBM freeze on some dummies, and yet more dummies on the upper level of JJ20 caused my infantry to move a bit more cautiously then I would've liked. His mortar up on the hill was all too real though, sending a pile of my men deep into the woods with their tails between their legs. Did I mention the French ELR of 2 yet? Yeah...there'd be plenty of green and disrupted Frenchies before the end of the game. Turn 3 was supposed to be the turn I made a strong move for the eastern bridge before any German reinforcements entered. Unfortunately my tanks didn't want to move on their own and set me back. Turn 3 saw my reinforcements attack in the west. Unfortunately they ran into a roadblock, which would force my tanks to take the long way around, costing me yet another couple turns. This is a very difficult board to attack on to accomplish the VC. There is literally one hex to link the east with the west, and this is a bridge which will be heavily guarded. I recognized that I would most likely have to try and take control of at least one of the bridges with my tanks, but being so slow they cannot move far, and my many attempts to move platoon-free were constantly foiled. To Scott's credit he did a great job making his eastern defense look formidable (with what turned out to be almost all dummies) and in targeting my best assets (my radio and heavy mortar were non-factors). I think the French reinforcements need to enter at least a turn earlier, and perhaps the Germans shouldn't get any reinforcements at all (or at least set to enter late rather than randomized). But that's why this is what it is - a free scenario for download.
2021-03-15(D) Scott Sherer vs Jeff B German winJeff pretty much sums it up...this seems to be a tough one for the French. I put almost all my real units on the German left flank and "defended" the right flank with one INF gun and a HS with an ATR and a whole bunch of dummies. All the heavy and light mortars went on the hill mass in the middle to harass the French from a distance and interdict both the central bridge that joins the two sides of the battlefield and the victory bridges. Things went pretty much to script with the mortars keeping the French heavy mortar and OBA on the sidelines and even managed to knock out a tank with a Shock/UK/Kill sequence. As the tanks can control the bridge and the Germans have very little in the way of credible AT assets until the AT gun reinforcement platoon comes on, I think there are scenarios where the French can win but they have to get their artillery involved and a few things break their way. Jeff and I decided it was around 70-30 pro-German. Still, an interesting action with a different map and it's free!
