Towards the end of 1917, the armies in Europe had grown weary of the continual slaughter of trench warfare. Some French troops had even mutinied and refused to attack. A breakthrough was desperately needed. The Allies attempted it in the Battle of Passchendaele. It would prove to be another massive slaughter of young men in battle. The area to be attacked was of great importance because of a high ridge controlled by the Germans. If a breakthrough could be achieved, the British could then move north and flank the Germans. The Australian 4th and 5th Divisions would lead an attack. On September 25th, the Aussies took part of Polygon Wood and Black Watch Corner at a cost of 5,000 casualties. Eight days later the Aussies attacked again. As the Australian 5th Division advanced through the smoke on the battlefield, emerging from that smoke came German soldiers, also advancing with bayonets in place.
