In early May 1943, the Allies launched Operation "Strike" to deal the coup de grace to the Axis forces cornered in northeastern Tunisia. Alongside the Anglo-Saxon troops, the Army of Africa deployed three infantry divisions and a Groupement Blinde Francais (GBF). The latter is a motley collection of armored units not yet re-equipped in Algeria and Morocco. Alongside a squadron of Somua and a company of US light tanks, the 5th Regiment of Chasseurs d'Afrique provided the bulk of the force with 65 Valentine offered by the British.
