Overview:

After the gun turrets had been destroyed, the remaining troops inside the fort had to be cleared out. The first attempt on 19 June was made to blast and burn the holdouts out using large explosives charges and drums of fuel oil. While these attacks caused great damage to the fort, wrecking the turrets and killing and injuring many of the defenders, the Commissars inside forced the remaining troops under their command to fight on. Finally, on 20 June, another 230 kg charge was lowered into the barbette of each turret. While these charges were being placed, the Russians detonated their own explosives in the western turret, setting off the German charge. The eastern turret was detonated as planned and a large fire was started there. The Germans entered the fort and were met with machine-gun fire. Even through the damage caused by the explosions, the Russian garrison fought on.
