Overview:
On 9th June, once the situation around Sainte-Marie Eglise was under control, General Bradley pushed the US VII Corps towards the Carentan peninsular and Cherbourg. A first step to taking the Norman port was to isolate the peninsular. On the 14th, the 90th Infantry Division’s attack had proven ineffective, and it fell to the newly arrived 9th Infantry Division to expand the perimeter of the 82nd Airborne westwards around Saint Saveur-le Vicomte. The men of the 90th Infantry Division continued its attacks with difficulty, while the paratroopers of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment destroyed several tanks belonging to Panzer Abteilung 100. The next day, the veterans of the 9th Division and the Paratroopers broke through to cut the peninsular. Near Orglandes, the GI’s of the 60th Infantry Regiment noticed a column of German tanks advancing towards the south, probably belonging to Panzer Abteilung 206 from Cherbourg. The GI’s deployed bazookas and anti-tank guns, losing two but destroying 3 Panzer III’s and forced the other to retreat. The 60th Regiment then continued its advance westwards.Attacker: German (Elements 1049th Grenadier Regt., 77th Infantry Division & Panzer-Abteilung 206)
Defender: American (Elements 60th Infantry Regt., 9th Infantry Division)
