Overview:

The German Army wanted to take the Dutch out of the war as quick as possible. They devised a plan to cut the Dutch Army in two and isolate each half. Army Group B was tasked with breaking through to Rotterdam. The XVI Panzer-Korps, which was part of Army group B, needed to create a diversion to the south of the main thrust. The 3rd Panzer was tasked with clearing Allied resistance around Hannut as part of the diversion. This area was defended by the French 1st Cavalry Corps, with infantry support from the Belgian 1st Corps. The French armor looked superior on paper, but lacked radios and freedom of movement.
