Overview:
Extending across the entire island was a series of interconnected cave complexes and fighting positions. The Marines moved forward many times, sweeping over strongpoints left for dozers and flame-tanks escorted by special teams of infantry, all trained to eliminate Japanese holdouts in their caves, tunnels and pillboxes. In the shadow of Hill 362A was Nishi Ridge, a position thick with fortifications. Many Marine soldiers would become casualties in actions to eliminate what would later be realized was Kuribayashi’s second line of defense. At 1100 hours on D+10, “A” Company moved forward to deal with an enemy pocket near the A-T ditch.Attacker: American (USMC) (Elements of 1st Section, Flame Tank Platoon, 28th regiment, 5th Marine Division and 2nd Platoon, "A" Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Regiment)
Defender: Japanese (Elements of No. 1 Platoon, 1st Company of 3rd Battalion, 311th IJA Regiment, 109th IJA Division)
