Overview:

The retreat across the Hungarian plains made every town along every river an important strategic position. Nagyvarad was no exception. The Hungarian 12th Division was just strong enough to repulse the weak probes from Pliyev’s cavalry-mechanized group, with the German 178th Infantry Regiment arriving just in time to meet the stronger attacks. Once the heavy tanks of the Soviet steamroller arrived and began blasting the town hall overlooking the Sebes-Koros River, communications were severed and the Axis forces were once again surrounded.
