Overview:

As spring arrived in the Crimea, the fortress of Sevastopol still stood defiant after resisting two offensives and a six month siege. A June offensive had XXX Corps attacking to break through Sevastopol’s eastern defenses. XXX Corp included a large Romanian contingent including the elite Vanatori de Munte (Mountain Hunters) of the 1st and 2nd Mountain Divisions. As XXX Corps reached the main Soviet defense line on Sapun Ridge on 28 June, the commander pressed his troops to force a breakthrough. Their opponents in the Independent Coastal Army, whose heroic defense was “encouraged” by ruthless political Commissars, were determined to hold their ground.
Attacker: Romanian/German (2nd Mountain Rifle Regiment, 1st (Romanian) Mountain Division and (German) 249th Assault Gun Division)

2023-06-11(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM Romanian/German winThis was a rare ASL attack that worked as planned! With the 47L in O12 to cover the H8-N11 road, I sent the Romanian AEs and both StuGs at the fanatic strongpoint M15. Everything else hit Jim's extreme left flank to grab the Level 2 victory hexes and hit the village from the north. The StuGs smoked the guns, and the 60 LMOR kept rate long enough to take out one 76* crew before being disabled. It took hard fighting but once the village was encircled, I had the upper hand. Jim's comments: Losing M15 and Hill 494 early was bad, but lots of smoke and three early CHs were the difference. Having to hold fanatic strongpoint K15 and defend the north side of the village spread the Russians too thin. I was defeated in detail. Fun scenario though.
