Overview:

After three days of heavy fighting, the 330th Infantry Regiment had secured the small village of Strass on the fringes of the Hurtgen Forest. The German defenders had withdrawn to a copse of woods to the east, blocking the American advance on the Roer River. On the evening of 13 December, Company E received orders to clear the woods. The regimental commander selected a point north of the brick farmhouse between Strass and the woods as a jumping-off point. Under cover of darkness, Company E advanced towards the woods. Suddenly, enemy fire erupted from the brick house. Both it and the Shermans were under German control!
