Overview:
The Germans had crossed the Somme and established three bridge-heads on the western shore at Abbeville, Amiens and Péronn. As these posed a mortal threat to the French forces, they had no alternative but to counterattack. At Abbeville, the recently promoted Général de Brigade Charles de Gaulle pressed forward, despite protests from his officers that the French units were not ready - - - -In The Abbeville Bridgehead, French infantry supported by R35 and nearly-impregnable B1-bis tanks set out to seize two strategic buildings. The Germans, lacking effective AT weaponry, might still try to immobilize the French monsters with their 37mm PaK guns.Attacker: French (4ème Division de Chars de Combat and 22ème Régiment d'Infanterie Coloniale)

2020-11-17 | (D) Andy Goldin | vs | Stephen Worrel | German win | As the German defender I chose to defend all three buildings while keeping my AT guns in the center of the board in O1/R1 woods hexes in the hopes of getting side shots as the French tanks moved to the objectives. I placed my MMG with the -1 leader in the upper level of O4 to shoot up the French infantry as they moved through the woods or hopefully in the open. I deployed a squad and used dummies as my screen to keep Stephen guessing as to where I was defending in strength although in hindsight I don't think it was that hard for him to figure out my deployment. Stephen moved his infantry through the woods in the center of the board toward my hidden AT guns but luckily not before each of them knocked out a tank a piece using the special HEAT round. My MGs started to take their toll, whittling away his numerical advantage in infantry. In a couple of twists of fate which only seem to happen in ASL, I managed to free a halfsquad which had been captured and re-arm it with weapons of their former captors who had been eliminated in CC. The next turn Steve fired into a melee, causing both of my squads to ELR and casualty reduce. These squads were then eliminated by his good order squad while attempting to withdraw from CC, thereby causing the loss of two of my squads in a single turn -- ouch! I managed to get some payback by getting a KIA on a green French squad which went berserk and had to charge across open ground, and a rate tear by one of my 37L guns knocked out one of the R35s and broke another squad for good measure. I pressed my advantage by continuing to fire on his stacks of broken squads which his leaders failed to rally. The lower broken morale for the French caused his infantry to disappear so that by turn 6 it was pretty much over. Good scenario overall. And we had fun playing through corner-case ASL rules and dice running hot and cold. | ||
