Overview:

With Indian independence came voluntary partition for the minority Muslims in India. Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) was in a precarious position; adjacent to newly created Pakistan and with a majority Muslim population, the J&K state was a principality ruled by a Hindu maharaja. Both Pakistan and India began to gather troops to claim the J&K State as their own. Insurgents gained control of the northernmost part of J&K. 50th Parachute (Indian), spread thin, was pushed back from Jhangar, which fell on December 24. During the next two months, the Indian forces began preparing to clear the road back to Jhangar. The first hurdle was Point 3284 and the village to the east of it, Kot. 2/2 Punjab was to clear both obstacles on the morning of 1 February.
