Overview:

As part of the US Marines assault on Bougainville, several diversionary operations were planned to benefit the defense of the Marines beachhead at Empress Augusta Bay. It was decided that a Radar station would have to be positioned on the north side of Mono Island near Soanotaiu Village. On 27 September a reinforced infantry company of the 8th New Zealand Brigade, accompanied by radar personnel and Seabees landed without opposition at Soanotaiu Village. At the same time two battalions of New Zealanders assaulted the south shore of Mono Island and after meeting several days resistance, began driving the Japanese remnants northward across the island toward Soanotaiu village.
