The northern spur of Horseshoe Hill still blocked the way west for the 37th Division. Having assaulted the hill the previous day with the 2nd Battalion, with little success, regimental commander Colonel G. Holland now decided to send the 1st Battalion against the dug-in Japanese defenders, this time with engineer support. Each Japanese position would have to be reduced with flamethrowers, hand grenades and even bayonets.Attacker: American (1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment)
