Overview:
As night fell General Auchinleck started the first of his "heaves" to displace the Germans from the area around Ruweisat Ridge with the final objective of cutting north toward the coast and linking up with other 8th Army units near Fuka on the coast road. The reconnaissance units of the New Zealand Division led the way in a push around and through the Italian positions beginning what would become known as the First Battle of Ruweisat Ridge.
