At the eastern limit of the Marine beachhead on Cape Gloucester was a piece of high ground called Target Hill. About a mile to the northwest was Suicide Creek, a narrow, steep-banked rivulet. An attack was planned across Suicide Creek with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines and the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. Unbeknownst to the US, Colonel Kenshiro Katayama had precisely the opposite plan; to hold at Suicide Creek and attack at Target Hill. While the Marines moved into position, an elaborate ambush was prepared for them. Scouts crossed the slippery stone streambed and waved the main body across. Then all hell broke loose.
