Overview:

The summer of 1939 saw a major border clash between Russian and Japanese forces over the line between the Mongolian People’s Republic and Manchukuo. Since the Japanese considered the Halha River the border, they felt a strong response was necessary when MPR and Soviet forces moved east of the river. This escalated into the largest conflict between the two countries since the Russo-Japanese War. Soviet engineers had thrown a number of bridges across the Halha to better supply their forces east of the river. Second Lt. Takayama was ordered to take his infantry platoon and a platoon of engineers to destroy one of these bridges. Two tanks from the 4th Tank Regiment were also assigned to assist in this mission.

2023-12-23(D) Jobbo Fett vs JobboFett Russian winQuick and dirty scenario with a fun objective that sets it apart from the usual. A banzai of Assault Engineers went impossibly poorly for the Japanese when multiple shots resulted in immediate KIAs for the assaulting troops. Numerous tries at critical hits were successful, but never providing the resulting KIA result the Japanese needed to succeed. A Russian leader (and subsequently squad) went berserk, and I had hoped they could kill the tank to a point they would generate a flame, but alas.
2023-03-23(A) Mark Thompson vs Jeff Talor (Russians) Japanese win

(VASL Log)
The Japanese attacked in the center, with the AFVs and Vehicular Dust effectively shielding the 10-2 / 4-4-8 stack and 9-1 / 4-4-7 stack, and were in a solid position at the beginning of Turn 2, with the Russian INF Gun (malf'd) and MMG (squad broken by DFF) out of commission and the AFVs at the bridge entrance. Hubris then took over with the Japanese rashly initiating two banzai attacks to get into position to set DCs the following turn, which were nearly annihilated by deadly Russian DFF and residual. By Turn 3, with all Japanese leaders dead and the DCs in Russian hands, the Japanese were left with only the long-odds of an AFV HE IFT KIA or Flame result against the Bridge. Unbelievably, the Japanese obtained an IFT Flame result after 8 shots. The remaining Russian units crashed the Bridge to extinguish the Flame, but were cut down by the AFVs. During the AFPH of Russian Turn 5, the Japanese rolled what was needed to convert the Flame to Blaze, winning the game. Across the littered battlefield, only 2 Russian squad equivalents and 2 Japanese AFVs remained....
2023-02-05(D) Dave Mareske vs Stephen Stewart Russian win

(VASL Log)
The Russians spread out in their defense creating a foxhole surrounded by wire for the Japanese to contend and I placed the MMG on the right flank. The MMG proved to be in a good place even though sometimes out of range. The Japanese attack came up the middle, the 9-1 LDR was with the 4-4-7s and the 10-2 was with the Assault Engineers. The Russians concentrated their fire on the 9-1 group for the first two turns and pretty much eliminated them, but I was not able to get any effective shots on the tanks, though eventually they were eliminated in CC. The AE at some point all went berserk, two of them going after the squad behind the wire and the third charging the bridge and getting KIAed. The last ditch effort came when the 10-2 LDR placed a DC on the bridge, but needing a "3" to destroy it, rolled a "10". Game ended with the Japanese with a few half squads and no tanks. Russian defense held. Very static defense, not a lot of movement for the Russians. Fun though...good intro to a few desert rules.
2021-06-25(D) Rich Weiley vs Dave Longworth Japanese winGot good service out of the infantry gun which managed to neutralise both Japanese tanks and took out a vehicle crew and assault engineer squad in CC (in which it also died). Unfortunately my infantry was being steadily whittled down. We played the last two turns with no good order Soviet units on the map as the Japanese managed to set and successfully detonate the DC to destroy the bridge.
2019-08-04(A) Shane Pask vs Russian winScenario mirrored history. Japs conceded end of turn 4 with only 1 broken HS assault engineer left and not enough time to reach the bridge and set the DC. Once the Jap infantry crossed the sand dunes they were toast.
