Overview:

On 24 May, faced with the deteriorating situation in France, the Allies decided to evacuate Norway. However, before the evacuation, the Anglo-French commanders wanted to retake Narvik. For that operation, the main attack would come from the north and be conducted by Lt.-Col. Magrin-Vernerrey's 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion. The unit was landed on Orneset Beach shortly before midnight on 28 May, achieving total surprise, overwhelming initial German resistance. The Franco-Norwegian second wave, however, landed under enemy gunfire. This delayed until 0430 the deployment of the detachment ordered to take Hill 457. The Legionnaires were to cover the attack by their allies. A company of Gebirgsjager launched a violent counterattack against the 2nd Company of the 13th Demi Brigade.

2024-07-31(D) Tony Fermendzin vs Mark Thompson German winI have to wonder if the designer did not get his dates mixed up. French charging straight up hill through open ground in the mud into the teeth of a German MG. I wonder if he really didn't mean 1916!?

Of course this is WWII, so the French brought some Norwegians to the party. It didn't really help. The allies got shot to pieces before they could bring their artillery to bear. It didn't help that they couldn't pass a morale check.

Mark was a great opponent. The scenario, however, was not my cup of tea. I just did not feel like there were many tactical options for the allies.
2023-06-28(A) Peter Palmer vs Mark Thompson German win[Imported from ROAR]
2023-06-27(D) Mark Thompson vs Peter Palmer (Germans) German winThe FFL were predictably nicked up in the first German PFPh and, in a bad omen for the Allies, the French 81mm malf'd on its first shot in the following Mph. The Allies did make solid progress to the crest of victory hill complex with acceptable losses and, with 2 movement phases left, faced the choice of rushing the German line 2 hexes away during the Mph (facing PBF/-1/-2 shots) before additional reinforcements arrived or advancing adjacent and facing PBF German PFPh and more hilltop foes. The Allies unwisely chose the former and were essentially annihilated. A good lesson reinforced the hard way (of course) - negative modifiers and a residual curtain will very likely be far worse than PBF PFPh. Somewhat unorthodox scenario (FFL set-up/initial exposure to PFPh) with a bit too much "middle" (e.g., uneventful traversing of terrain) - there are better ones of this type in my view.
2023-02-06(D) Dwayne Duval vs A French / Norwegian winThe attack was a total success, with the Germans conceding at the top of turn 4.
